Children's bookclub volunteer

Helping staff run a children’s book club for children to share their love of reading

About the role

Book club volunteers play a crucial role in helping to build children’s confidence in not only reading but speaking and writing skills too. They help staff provide sessions where the children can talk about the books they’ve read, do some book-related activities and learn to choose books for themselves and read for pleasure. This also develops a reading habit. This role is great for anyone who likes working with children, has some time to help prepare the sessions and wants to make a difference!

What we need from you

Our book club role requires someone who is enthusiastic and willing to commit time to help organise and deliver a session (usually once a month). Sessions normally last between 60 and 90 minutes. Each session will vary, but the simple format of sharing what the children have read, doing book-related activities and choosing new books will be the same.

We will ask for a reference when you apply for the role, and you will need to be at least 18 years old.

What you can expect from us

We value all our volunteers and our commitment to you is spelled out in our Library Volunteer Charter (pdf format, 92Kb).  We will be flexible and supportive and will provide training for you before you start the role.
