Clerking

What a clerk does and how to become one.

All boards must have a clerk, who is the board’s ‘governance professional’.

Professional clerking is crucial to the effective functioning of the board. Their role is not just about good and effective organisation and administration. The clerk helps the board to understand its role, functions and legal duties and supports the chair of governors in enabling and facilitating strategic debate and decision making.

How to become a clerk

Oxfordshire Governor Services runs a Clerking Service employing professional and knowledgeable clerks for our schools, academies and MAT (multi-academy trust) boards.

If you are interested in applying to become part of our team of governance professionals, please contact us clerking.service@oxfordshire.gov.uk  for further information.
