Improvements to Frideswide Square

Improvements to this set of junctions are progressing well but disruptions and delays are expected.

work at Frideswide Square

The first phase of work at the exit turn off the train station was complete as per our programme on Friday 23 February 2018. We left the water barriers on the footway in place to protect the new concrete base and extend its curing period.

Contractors started Phase 3 i.e. outside the Royal Oxford Hotel on Monday 26 February but had to stop working for 2½ days due to extreme wintery conditions. Site activities were resumed on site on Monday 5 March. We now anticipate this phase to be complete on Tuesday 13 March.

We have now programmed night-time works to proceed with the repairs on Botley Road island i.e. Phase 2 on Tuesday 13 from 7pm. If contractors cannot complete all within one night, the same arrangement may need to be in place on Wednesday 14 again from 7pm.
Traffic management for Phase 4 will be in place before Wednesday 14 March morning peak for approximate duration of 2 weeks subject to weather conditions.

The above means the following.

Tuesday 13 March from 7pm: Phase 2.

  • Eastbound bus stop in Frideswide Square will be suspended and replaced by a temporary stop outside of former Kwik Fit premises on Park End St.
  • Temporary traffic lights will be installed on Botley Rd, westbound exit from the Square, and southbound exit from Oxford train station.
  • Becket St will be one-way street with an anti-clockwise system.

NB: we shall advise you by Wednesday 14 whether the same arrangement needs to be in place from 7pm.

Tuesday 13 March daytime: end of Phase 3.

  • Traffic management supporting works of phase 3 will be removed.

Wednesday 14 – Wednesday 28 March 2018: Phase 4.

  • Westbound bus stop in Frideswide Square will be suspended and all services will stop outside King Charles’ House (opposite Royal Oxford Hotel).
  • No requirement for any temporary traffic lights.
  • Becket St will be one-way street with a clockwise system.
