Military presence in Oxfordshire

Locations of military bases in Oxfordshire and details of the expansion of RAF Brize Norton.

Map showing military presence in Oxfordshire

Oxfordshire has a large military presence with more than 8,500 military personnel (October 2015) and almost 5,000 family members living and working in the county. Two-thirds of these are members of the RAF. They are stationed at:

  1. Bicester Garrison
  2. RAF Brize Norton
  3. Abingdon Station
  4. Shrivenham Station
  5. Vauxhall Barracks
  6. RAF Benson

We are committed to supporting our military forces communities across the county; this is underwritten by our Armed Forces Covenant and our regular Civil Military Partnership meetings.

Military Champions

We also support the Oxfordshire military bases by providing a Military Champion for each. These are:

  • Overall military champion - Cllr Ian Hudspeth
  • Bicester Garrison – Cllr Dan Sames
  • RAF Brize Norton – Cllr Pete Handley
  • RAF Benson – Cllr Lynda Atkins
  • Abingdon Station – Cllr Richard Webber
  • Vauxhall Barracks – Cllr Dr Simon Clark
  • Shrivenham Defence Academy – Cllr Yvonne Constance

Planned changes

In order to remain effective, the military is adapting to new economic and political challenges.

Military changes in the county have seen the expansion of Brize Norton, which became the single air movement base for the military in the UK, employing nearly 4,000 service personnel and more than 600 civilians. The Army's rebasing plans will see some changes in regiments as they withdraw from overseas.
