Street café licence (table and chairs)

How to request a licence for putting tables and chairs outside restaurants and cafés.

The Business and Planning Act 2020 was introduced to promote economic recovery and growth in response to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. This new process introduces a streamlined and cheaper route for businesses such as cafes, restaurants and bars to get a licence to place furniture on the pavement. The Act has been extended, and the district councils will continue to issue licences.

The government are looking to make this measure permanent through the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, with certain appropriate amendments to make the process sustainable for the longer term and the guidance will be updated to reflect this once Parliament has considered the Bill.

To view the full details of new regulations, please see the Business and Planning Bill on the GOV.UK website.
