The Oxfordshire Museum

The museum is situated in an 18th century house in the heart of Woodstock.

There is a surprise around every corner of the Oxfordshire Museum. Explore the modern purpose-built Garden Gallery that hosts our changing exhibitions. Relax with a drink and slice of cake from the café in the airy, glazed extension, or sit outdoors and enjoy views across the large garden. Take your time browsing gifts in the shop and reception spaces.

The interactive dinosaur gallery, and garden with its dinosaur footprints and life-size Megalosaurus hidden amongst Jurassic plants, is always popular with visiting families. History and archaeology galleries tell the stories of the people who have lived in the County in the past. The Museum is spread across three floors, the upper floors are accessed via stairs with a platform lift. The ground floor has two levels and a platform lift and external ramp are available for this step.

More about the museum

Museum garden cafe

The museum café serves sandwiches and light lunches, including hot soups, filled, baked potatoes, and a variety of ‘toasties’ all deliciously warming on a cold winter’s day. Indulge yourself from our wide variety of cakes, scones, and other treats, accompanied by hot chocolate, freshly ground coffee, or a selection of teas.

Our children’s treats include Dino lunch boxes and our ever-popular dinosaur biscuits, hot chocolates with cream and marshmallows (everyone’s favourite), babycinos, and freshly baked chocolate cookies.

We have plenty of seating both indoors in our well-ventilated café and in the Museum’s extensive garden

Museum gift shop

The Museum shop is overflowing with books and gifts, with something for everyone. For children, whether they want to hatch their own dinosaur or discover more about the Romans, there’s plenty to choose from. For adults, we have a delightful range of books, greeting cards, gifts and homewares, including many products from local artists and suppliers.

We accept card and cash payments for shop items and to make donations.

Museum garden

There is always something to delight from the carpet of early spring bulbs around the ancient chestnut tree to the perfume of the early summer roses and lilies, or the crunch of the autumn leaves. Enjoy the café produce whilst admiring the garden from the vantage point of a table on the decking or picnic on the lower lawn. The garden also provides a striking setting for wedding photographs, please contact us for more information.

Dinosaur garden

In the garden meet our life-size megalosaur, explore our Jurassic-era plants and see the 168 million-year-old dinosaur footprints excavated from Ardley Quarry in Oxfordshire.
