New look Milton Interchange to open soon

Published 04 May 2016

Work on the final stages of work to open the “hamburger” at the new look Milton Interchange will take place on 7 and 8 May 2016.

A total of 58 traffic light poles will be commissioned and tested before the new road layout is fully opened, taking westbound traffic from Didcot on the A4130 through the centre of the roundabout, and then onto the A34 towards Oxford and the M40.

The lights will initially work on fixed timings while the “MOVA” system – an intelligent system that responds to changing demands on the roads – is optimised by specialist signals contractors.

Road closures for work

The roundabout at Milton Interchange will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 7 May to enable the final stages of Oxfordshire County Council’s work to the roundabout to improve access to Milton Park and the A34.

The A34 will be open but there will be no access off for Milton or onto the roundabout from any approach. Diversions will be signed.

The team hope to have the signals working and the roads reopened by late afternoon on Sunday 8 May, but the closure period is being advertised as running until 4am on Monday 9 May to allow for unforeseen circumstances.

More information on the closures, including maps showing the diversions, is available at

Infrastructure to meet demands of the future

Commissioning the signals marks the final piece of significant work of this multi-million pound transformation of the Milton Interchange.

The scheme enhances Science Vale’s connections to the national road network by improving the operation of the area’s gateway to the A34.

It has been designed to enable the local road infrastructure to meet the demands of the forecast increase in jobs and traffic in the area, resulting from an additional 14,000 homes and 16,000 jobs expected by 2029.

The interchange will have a new ‘hamburger’ style roundabout layout, which will take traffic from Didcot travelling westbound on the A4130 through the centre of the roundabout and then onto the northbound A34 towards Oxford and the M40.

The Milton Park Link has also been widened to four lanes eastbound on the A4130 and on the A34 slip road southbound. The roundabout itself has been widened as has the southbound off slip road and the A4130 approach from Steventon.

Benefits now and for the future

Sue Scane, Oxfordshire County Council's Director of Environment and Economy, said: “After more than a year’s worth of hard work to build a new road underneath the A34, much of it done while it was open to traffic, it is great to get to this point.

“All the big engineering jobs are now done and all the remains are small works such as landscaping and finishing touches.

“I hope once the lights are on and the road open people using the interchange will see the benefits to their journeys now and in the future as the area continues to see development and increased traffic levels.

“While the work is being done there will be disruption in the area and we apologise in advance for this and thank drivers for their patience.”
