Public register of fire safety enforcement

Register of information concerning the issue of prohibition, alteration and enforcement notices.

The Environment and Safety Information Act 1988

This act requires fire services and local authorities to maintain a register of information concerning the issue of prohibition, alteration and enforcement notices. The register must be open to inspection by the public free of charge.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service issues these types of notices under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Publication of this register also fulfils our responsibilities under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Definitions of notices

1. Alteration notices

An alteration notice may be served on the responsible person if the fire and rescue authority is of the opinion that any structural alterations being made to the premises will constitute a serious risk to relevant persons (whether due to features of the premises, their use, and any hazard present or any other circumstances).

2. Enforcement notices

Where the fire and rescue authority is of the opinion that the responsible person or other person mentioned in Article 5(3) has failed to comply with any provision of the Fire Safety Order.

3. Prohibition notices

Where the fire and rescue authority is of the opinion that the risk to persons in case of fire is so serious it will be necessary for the authority to prohibit or restrict the use of parts of the premises until the specified matters have been remedied.
