Historic landscape walks

Three walks form part of the historic landscapes project

A series of walks guiding you through some of Oxfordshire’s beautiful historic countryside, picking out buildings, archaeological sites and monuments, and uncovering hidden traces of the past. Produced by the Oxfordshire Historic Landscape Characterisation project funded by Historic England

Accessibility information

The routes pass through a farmed natural landscape so expect uneven surfaces, some slopes that could be slippery in wet weather, growing vegetation and possibly livestock.

Route 1 (South Leigh): has no stiles or kissing gates. The walk around the nature reserve is more accessible and has paths suitable for wheelchairs.

Route 2 (Blewburton): can be done entirely on bridleways, avoiding the one stile and sticking to good quality tracks or routes. The diversion up to Blewburton hillfort is additional and can be avoided as it has a steep climb. The path from Whiteshoot Stables across Lid’s Bottom has one stile, three kissing gates and a very steep slope on grass. This can be circumnavigated by returning to Blewbury via Woodway Road, a quiet lane, instead.

Route 3 (Ewelme): This walk keeps to good tracks throughout. There is, however, a steep climb as you join the Ridgeway beneath Swyncombe House.
