Who can join the pension scheme?

Information about who can join the pension scheme.

Eligible employees

The LGPS is available to all employees under age 75, eligible for membership, with a contract of employment of three months or more in local government or other organisations that  have chosen to participate in it, except teachers, police and firefighters. These groups have their own pension scheme arrangements.

The brief guide to LGPS 2014 (pdf format, 364Kb) gives you an outline to the costs and benefits of membership.

The section below details the procedure for a new LGPS member.

There is more information for scheme members on the LGPS website.

Employees of local government (county, city and district councils)

If you are employed in local government (other than town and parish councils), you will be automatically ‘contractually’ enrolled into the main section of  the LGPS when you start employment.

Employees of local government (town and parish councils)

An employee of a town or parish council can only join the LGPS if that council has agreed to offer membership.  Contact the council direct about their pension offer. If you qualify, your employer you will automatically enrol you into the main section of the scheme.

Employees of non-local government organisations

If you are employed by a non-local government organisation that offers you membership of the LGPS, such as a college of further education or an academy, or higher education establishment you will be automatically contractually enrolled into the scheme.

If you are employed by an 'admission body', the body will nominate you for membership and bring you into the scheme from the nomination date.

Frequently asked questions

My contract is under three months

If your contract of employment is for less than three months you can elect to join the scheme, using the Opt into the LGPS form, which you send to your employer.

I have previously opted out - can I rejoin?

The LGPS is not a compulsory pension scheme. If you elected to opt out before, you can change your mind and join again, provided you are still eligible to join.   Complete and return to your employer the Opt into the LGPS form

How flexible are contributions?

What happens next?

Your employer will tell you:

  • how they will assess and collect your contributions
  • who to contact if you have questions about those contributions
  • Your employer will tell Pension Services that you have joined the scheme

Pension Services will:

  • set up your pension account with the Oxfordshire fund
  • contact you, by post, to complete and return a previous pension history form.
    • This will ensure we hold a full record of earlier LGPS membership
    • register any scheme protections, or if there is no previous membership, we record your acknowledgement of your membership
    • give you the opportunity to begin transfer requests from other schemes.

NB - Each employment should open a new pension record, and you can expect to receive and return to us a separate previous pension history form.

After you have signed the form you can return it as a scanned document.
